The North Coast Office Director oversees all program and development work related to environmental resources, the community, and the quality of life in the Pee Dee region, including Georgetown, Horry, and Williamsburg Counties. The Director works closely with the Charleston program staff on project strategy and the development staff on funding opportunities.

 

This position requires excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills and an understanding of environmental issues including land use and conservation, air and water quality, energy and recycling, and sustainable agriculture.

 

The ideal candidate must be a self-starter and a team player with a track record of demonstrated initiative. The Director must be able to succeed in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and capable of identifying and managing diverse projects in a high-pressure setting.

 

Conservation League issues oftentimes need addressing after work hours, and the Director must be willing to respond. He/she must demonstrate creative problem-solving skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, and constant attention to detail.

The North Coast Office Director will build and manage networks with citizens, businesses, and public officials. This work requires:

 

  • Representing the Conservation League in the community
  • Overseeing all North Coast projects (planning, policy, and regulations)
  • Developing and advocating for legislative policy relevant to North Coast issues
  • Writing media pieces, grants, and other publications
  • Developing and creating communication materials, including:
    • Social media and web based communications
    • Traditional media
  • Managing the North Coast Office budget
  • Leading the North Coast program work
  • Speaking comfortably and effectively at conferences, public hearings, and events
  • Working with a diverse set of interest groups
  • Thinking critically and strategically about complex policy and regulatory issues
  • Organizing public opposition and support at the community and state level
  • Developing relationships with Conservation League Board members, donors, and members
  • Supporting Growfood Carolina and other Conservation League initiatives in the North Coast as needed
  • Staying current on local news by reading and engaging in community outreach
  • Developing and implementing an effective strategy for each project, while distinguishing between the elements that should be discussed with leadership

 

This North Coast Director plans and executes diverse projects under multiple deadlines, manages internal and external relationships, and makes decisions in a variety of situations.

 

The Director operates in a professional office environment in Georgetown, SC. This role requires a working knowledge of computers, projectors, and conference lines. Additionally, this position requires working with local communities and attending meetings, lunches, dinners, and events.

 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, and climb stairs. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

 

This employee travels occasionally to Columbia and to the Charleston office, as well as to conferences and meetings, as needed.

 

Required Education and Experience:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Three years of relevant work or volunteer experience
  • Willingness and ability to attend events beyond work hours
  • Experience with grassroots advocacy campaigns
  • Demonstrated writing skills

 

Preferred Education and Experience:

 

  • Advanced degree (MBA, JD, MA, etc.)
  • At least five years of experience in land use
